Johnson & Johnson Medtech is seeking a highly skilled and innovative Principal R&D Engineer to join our Neurovascular team in Galway, Ireland. As a global leader in neurovascular care, we are dedicated to transforming stroke treatment and improving patient outcomes worldwide.

This exciting role offers a unique opportunity to lead the development and optimization of life-changing medical devices. The successful candidate will leverage their technical expertise and leadership capabilities to design and develop advanced implants and delivery systems for treating hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke. Additionally, they will collaborate across multiple cross-functional teams, managing projects from initial concept to commercialization.

What You Will Do / Key Responsibilities

Lead the design, development, and validation of neurovascular implants and delivery systems, ensuring products meet regulatory standards and market needs.
Solve complex technical challenges to troubleshoot and optimize device performance during development.
Apply expertise in polymers, metals, and composite materials to innovate and enhance device durability and performance.
Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, clinical, and regulatory teams to accelerate project timelines and ensure product success.
Develop and implement robust testing protocols, material characterization, and performance evaluations.
Contribute to intellectual property through patent filings, peer-reviewed publications, and knowledge sharing.
Partner with clinical advisors and Key Opinion Leaders to translate clinical needs into innovative design solutions.
Stay informed of industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory updates to inform R&D strategy.
Mentor junior team members and foster a culture of innovation, scientific excellence, and continuous improvement.

Who You Are / Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. Candidates with extensive industry experience are encouraged to apply, regardless of academic credentials.
Typically 10+ years of experience in R&D or manufacturing within the medical device industry. Experience in neurovascular or similar therapeutic areas is a plus.

Preferred Competencies & Experience

Proven expertise in developing implants, delivery systems, or similar devices.
Strong knowledge of polymers and metallic biomaterials, including biocompatibility, processing, and performance.
Demonstrated success in leading projects and fostering cross-functional collaboration.
Passionate about innovation and committed to continuous learning.
Exceptional problem-solving, communication, and innovative thinking skills.
Knowledge of regulatory standards and submission processes (FDA, ISO, etc.).
