Purpose of the role:

The primary focus of this post will be to play an active role in the academic direction of courses including teaching, assessment and administration.

Job Summary:

Lecture on both daytime, evening and blended learning programmes as timetabled, from NFQ Level 7 to 9 in common law and international law modules;
Actively research and publish in given area;
Work with the Programme Director for Postgraduate Law and Programme Director for Undergraduate Law in respect of lecturing, internal moderation, academic misconduct meetings and postgraduate vivas.
Assist in preparing for Exam Boards, timetabling, Open Evenings, learner events, programme review preparations etc.
Advancing the reputation of the College.

To ensure that these responsibilities are met, we ask that you:

Find time to meet regularly with the Faculty Administrator, Programme Directors and Head of Faculty these four individuals are important contact points for you as a lecturer at Griffith
Familiarise yourself with your lecturing timetable and room locations.
Ensure you are familiar with your Programme Document and Approved Programme Schedule
Prepare for your module (produce module handbook, assessment briefs etc and make resources available to learners via Moodle)
Produce all necessary assessments, in advance of the semester and no later than the first week of the semester
Manage your Module Assessment Strategy including repeat Assessment and grading for August sittings
Attend and participate in Faculty and Programme Meetings
Ensure you keep learner information safe and secure –please see the section on GDPR later in this booklet
Treat learners and colleagues with professionalism and respect
Represent the best interests of your colleagues and the College as a whole when dealing with learners and/or the public
Discuss any issues as they arise with your Programme Director
Attend to all module and programme administration in a timely and professional manner
Familiarise yourself with Griffith College regulations
Complete Lecturer Module Report each semester which feeds into Annual Programme Review.

Principal duties are:

General

Teaching such assigned classes as deemed appropriate by your manager, day or evening.
Carrying out assessment, monitoring and evaluation of examination work, and providing an academic and consultative support to learners.
In this ever increasing customer focused market it is imperative that you as lecturer are available to learners either for a meeting before or after class, have e-mail contact via your ‘@griffith.ie‘ account and participate in the discussion forums on Moodle.
It is essential that you do not provide hints, tips or suggestions for the examinations that result in the examination / assessment process becoming compromised and the integrity of the process thereby undermined.
Providing academic input on existing and new courses and course development.
Participating in appropriate committees, meetings and training sessions convened by management, at not additional fee.
Maintaining appropriate records and making available information as required by management.
Participating in the development, implementation and maintenance of academic quality assurance policies.
Participate in activities related to the development of the faculty / department and of Griffith College.
Be alert to any situation and behaviour, which may result in a breach of college policies.
Deal with learners, staff and visitors in a courteous and professional manner.
Keep all records to the agreed format.
Adhere to the recording of attendance rules.
Respond to the findings of the Learner satisfaction appraisals which your manager will discuss with you one or more times during the semester.
Lectures must not be cancelled, irrespective of the circumstances. In extenuating circumstances, should you find yourself in a position where a lecture must be cancelled, you should contact the Law Faculty immediately advising them of same, your cancelled lectures must be rescheduled within two weeks from the date of cancellation – within timetable constraints and not on a Friday. Salary deduction will apply should lectures not be rescheduled.
Your lecture notes and materials used in delivering your module must be made available to learners registered onto your course through the College learning management tool, Moodle. We are proposing that the collection of assignments will be via Moodle, training in the use of Moodle for this will be provided to you.
Take attendance at each class to comply with our legal obligation to accurately record attendance for our non-EU learners. Take attendance using CABS card and scanner and on paper when all scanners are in use. Attendance records have to be returned to the Law Faculty office in timely manner in order to ensure that the records are electronically inputted by the CA and are up to date.
Deal with all information relating to activities undertaken and information received in the strictest confidence.
Keep up to date on legislative and regulatory frameworks / requirements on an ongoing basis. These will be provided by the College as needed.
To participate and develop pedagogy within the faculty and Support your manager through the development and implementation of best practice in all areas of teaching.
Attend Pre-semester meeting and one Course Committee meetings.
Attend pre prep exam boards, prep exam boards and final exam boards.
Assist with the day to day running of the Clinical Legal Centre and attend and contribute at events etc.

Preparation of Teaching plan, Examinations and Assignments:

You are required to prepare and submit to your manager for approval, a teaching plan before the start of each semester – this needs to be approved by your Programme Directors and uploaded to Moodle before term begins.
You must provide reading lists for learners and revise these, in conjunction with the library on a semester-by-semester basis – please contact the library well before the term begins, as there is a lead time in book delivery.
You are required to carry out assignment(s) per module in line with the approved course document.
Assist in the internal review/moderation of undergraduate assessments.
Moderation of exam corrections between Cork and Dublin will be undertake on a sample basis to ensure all learners work is assessed in a consistent matter, you may be asked to participate in this exercise and or have your marks altered.
Your assessments will be subject to the overall review and control of the external examiner for the programme and his/her decision as to their suitability is final.
Your presence is required in the examination hall for the first half hour of the examination in your module in order to deal with any queries that may arise, no additional fee is paid for same.
You will also be required to be present at internal (Examination Committee meetings) and External Examination Board meetings at the end of each semester and no additional fee is paid for same.

Correction of Examinations and Assignments:

For each module you are teaching, you are required to correct all assessments submitted both plus in addition to this the repeat August exams. All scripts have to be collected and returned within five working days from the submission date.
Learners are required to submit their assignments via Moodle for correction, marking and feedback purposes. All assignments will therefore be available on-line for you to review, correct, mark and provide written feedback to the learners. There are also made available to your External Examiner. All assignments must be inputted and processed through ‘turn-it-in’ software to evaluate learners’ own work. A photocopy of the marks, comments and feedback provided to the learners must be submitted to the faculty.
There is a checking procedure that must be followed when collecting and returning assignments and exams – deadline dates for return of same must be adhered to. Upon completion of the checking procedure corrected assignments can be returned to learners in class.
Unless otherwise agreed in advance with your manager, all assignments must be corrected and results communicated to learners within a two week period.
All assignment results must be made available to learners well in advance of their examinations. Overall results for modules assessed on assignment basis only must also be made available in advance of their examinations.
You may be required to provide feedback to the learners individually regarding the submission of their work (either orally or in writing).
Unless otherwise agreed by the Examinations Office, all examination scripts must be corrected and returned within five working days from the examination date.
All assignment and exam results must be inputted into Component Mark Sheets e-mailed by the CA and then completed Component Mark Sheets must be returned to the CA for the checking procedure.
The payments for assignment and exam corrections will be made by a separate company, details of same will be forwarded during the first few weeks of term.

Health & Safety / Fire Safety:

Be familiar with College policy and procedures in relation to
1. Outbreak of Fire
2. Evacuation procedures for College
3. Assembly Point
Ensure Fire Fighting equipment/emergency exits are unobstructed.
Identify and report any situation or circumstance that may compromise the safety of Learners or Staff. Liaise with your manager with a view to eliminating risks.
Any other duties that may be assigned by College management from time to time.

Essential Requirements

Honours law degree and postgraduate (masters) qualification;
Possess a PhD or currently completing PhD;
Experience teaching common and international law at third level (NFQ Level 7, 8 and 9);
Available for daytime and evening lectures;
Actively publish and participate in conferences;
Practical legal experience is preferable;
IT literate;

Certificate in Education, Learning and Development.
